Treasures Nursery Allotment @ The Edge
Behind the Methodist Church on Chesterfield Road, a calm, green oasis thrives. Fostering a wonderful community spirit, we work in conjunction with The Edge Ministries to provide the children with a large space in which to grow, explore and develop.
At the beginning of 2024 we were lucky enough to have been granted some additional funds to help develop an area of land alongside the wonderful work of the volunteers at The Edge Ministries. Over the year, we have gathered resources such as wheelbarrows, forks, spades, seeds, wetsuits, wellies – the list goes on and the children have been actively involved every step of the way. Digging, weeding, sowing seeds, watering through the summer and harvesting the produce. We have successfully grown potatoes, carrots, green beans and pumpkins and are hoping next year our beetroot and onions grow well. The children also planted some sunflower seeds, kindly donated by Belmayne - Independent Chartered Financial Planners and were lucky enough to win their annual sunflower growing competition.
There are so many benefits for the children – it is a perfect way to foster physical development and at the same time promote a healthier lifestyle. Children are also more likely to try new foods if they have grown them themselves. Children’s senses are developed as they touch, taste and smell, as well as promoting mental wellbeing. The children have learnt more about our local environment and practised the highway code as we walk to and from the allotment.
We have achieved so much in a short space of time and the children love their time at the allotment. We are so lucky to have such an enriching environment to enhance our learning at Treasures Nursery.
